Historic landmarks are granted official recognition and protectionfor their contribution to the cultural and aesthetic heritage. Most historic properties are buildings or districts, but they may also be archaeological sites, engineering structures, sculpture, or landscape features. A property designated as historic for the purposes of DC law may also be recognized as historic by the Federal government. The DC Inventory of Historic Sites is a listing of properties designated by the Historic Preservation Review Board and includes approximately 23,600 buildings.

A property designated as a DC historic landmark may also be recognized by the Federal government as a National Historic Landmark. National Historic Landmarks are properties designated by the Secretary of the Interior for their outstanding integrity and significance to the nation as a whole. National Historic Landmarks are automatically entered on the National Register.
