Principal,
Architectural Design and Historic Preservation
Policy Compliance
Stephen brings 15 years experience in historic
preservation, cultural resource management, archaeology, and computer science to
the practice. Prior to forming DC Historic Designs, he was with the Cultural Resources Division of the National Park Service. In the late 1980’s, he founded Hansen Associates, a firm that led the way in the application of 3D computer modeling for
historic preservation and archaeology. He serves as the Architectural Historian for the Capitol Historic Trust and on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Book Hill Park in Georgetown. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin
College, an M.A. from The George Washington University, and a professional
certificate in Historic Preservation from Goucher College.
Don A. Swofford, FAIA,
Architect, Architectural Historian
Don Swofford, FAIA. Don has over 39 years of experience in the fields of restoration, rehabilitation, and traditional design. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and serves as Chair of the AIA’s National Historic Resources Committee's Steering Committee. He has numerous citations and commendations for historic rehabilitation of National Historic Landmarks, which include the Loudoun County Preservation Society Award, the James River Chapter Design Award, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation Great Homes of America Award. Don holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Texas A & M, and a Masters degree in Architectural History from the University of Virginia.
Lorena Permuy,
Architect, Historic Preservation Specialist
Lorena Permuy Lorena is a registered architect and has both public and private sector experience in architectural design, architectural research and preservation. Her professional preservation experience includes renovations, rehabilitations and adaptive-reuse with numerous building types and has included work in programming, project development and the regulatory review process involved in historic preservation. Lorena has been a Board Member of the Latrobe Chapter, the local chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians and Vice-President of the Historic Preservation Planning Alumni of Cornell Univeristy. Lorena holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Notre Dame University and a Masters degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell Univerisity, where she is currently a Ph.D. candidate.
Sherri Marsh Johns,
Historic Research and Documentation and Materials
Sherri has more than 14 years experience in the fields of architectural
research, cultural resource planning, historic preservation law compliance and
historic restoration project management. In addition, Ms. Johns teaches Documenting Historic Properties for Goucher College and has more than 10 years experience as a collegiate
educator. She holds a B.S. from the University of Maryland and an M.A.,
University of Delaware and is also Principal of Retrospect Cultural Resource Services.
Larry
Atkins, Project Management and Planning
Larry has over 30 years of construction
management, design/built, and real estate development experience on major
projects in the region and around the United States. Many of his projects have
been the adaption and restoration of historic properties. Prior to joining DC Historic Designs, he worked for
Stuever Bros, Ecceles & Rous, Bovis Lend Lease Americas and London, and Devitt
Street Bovis. Larry has a
Bachelor of Science Degree from Purdue University in Construction Management, an
AS in Architectural Technology from Virginia Commonwealth University, a professional
certificate in Historic Preservation from Goucher College.
Krista Kendall, Real Estate Development and Tax Credits
Krista has extensive knowledge in the areas of real estate development and finance with a historic preservation overlay. Prior to joining DC Historic Designs, she was senior loan officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation Loan Fund, providing technical assistance in the areas of business development, historic preservation, finance, and real estate development . She holds a Bachelor degree in Geography with a concentration in Urban Studies from Montclair State University, and a professional certificate in Historic Preservation from Goucher College.
